Clare’s
fourth and final volume was published in July 1835 by a different publisher from
his previous books. The poems were
chosen and edited from a large manuscript collection that Clare had drawn up for
a proposed publication to be
called The Midsummer Cushion.
Almost one third of the volume is taken up by 86 sonnets.
